Day 1 - All Things Outlander

CULROSS

Day one of this Outlander tour starts with a visit to Scotland’s 17th century town of Culross (pronounced coo–riss) on the banks of the Firth of Forth. Largely unchanged over the years, this conservation village served as the location of the village of Cranesmuir. Visit the home of Geillis Duncan and the site of Claire’s herb garden. Together we will walk the cobbled streets and narrow lanes enjoying the peaceful tranquillity of this unique village.

FALKLAND

Leaving Culross, we will drive north into the Kingdom of Fife and to the village Falkland. This former Royal Burgh was the location of 1940’s Inverness. Here you will see Mrs Bairds B&B (The Covenanter Hotel)  where Claire and Frank spent their second honeymoon as well as the fountain where Frank encounters the strange figure watching Claire at the window.

DOUNE CASTLE

Next stop along the way is Doune Castle. Built in the 14th century and better known to fans as Castle Leoch, the home of Jamie’s uncle and Clan Chief Colum MacKenzie. You will have time to explore the castle and see Mrs Fitz’s kitchen, the great hall where the clans gather to pledge their allegiance to the Laird and the ground where the men played shinty after the boar hunt.

BLACKNESS CASTLE

Our next castle is like no other. The windswept and inhospitable Blackness Castle stands on the shore of the Firth of Forth and is the perfect location to portray the Fort William Headquarters of the ruthless and unpredictable Captain Jack Randall. Historically a place of punishment, this is where the scenes of Jamie being flogged by Black Jack where filmed.

MIDHOPE CASTLE

It is a short drive to our final, but most anticipated, Outlander location of the day Lallybroch, the ancestral home of Jamie Frazer himself. The 16th century tower house of Midhope Castle sits nestled amongst the trees and farms on the Hopeton estate and is perhaps the most iconic location of the entire Outlander part of the tour. Although the building itself is now derelict you are free to wander the grounds, sit on the steps and gaze through the courtyard arch in search of Jamie.

The Three Sisters at Glencoe

Day 2 - Loch Lomond and The Highlands

On day two we begin our tour north into the rugged Scottish Highlands.

LOCH LOMOND

Starting with the gentle winding roads around Loch Lomond, an area of unrivalled natural beauty that has inspired songwriters and poets alike. We will have a brief stop on the banks of the loch for you to appreciate the view and take some pictures.

GLENCOE

As we venture further into the Highlands of Scotland, we will pass through the spectacular Rannoch Moor on route to our next stop at Glencoe. This awe-inspiring landscape was formed by volcanic activity before being carved and sculpted by icy glaciers during the last ice age. Whilst appreciating the areas natural beauty you will hear tales of its dark and murderous past.

GLENFINNAN

Moving on, we make our way through Fort William to the Glenfinnan viaduct and monument. The viaduct will be instantly recognisable to Harry Potter fans as the bridge Harry and his friends cross on the train to Hogwarts. The Glenfinnan Monument, with its lone Highlander perched atop, stands as a tribute to those who fought and died for the Jacobite cause. Said to be the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie first raised his standard as a call to arms from those who supported his cause.

INVERNESS

Now it is time to make our way to Inverness where we will be spending the night. Along the way we will pass the world-famous Loch Ness, and who knows, maybe we will spot Nessie on her evening swim.

Clava Cairns

Day 3 - Culloden and Standing Stones

CLAVA CAIRNS

Our last day begins in Inverness and a visit to the Clava Cairns, a bronze age burial site that is said to be the inspiration for ‘Craig Na Dun’. You will have time to stroll around the site, with its large circular burial cairns and impressive standing stones. Just be careful not to get too close to the stones, who knows what might happen!

CULLODEN

From here it is a short drive to the infamous Culloden Moor, site of the last battle of the Jacobite uprising where the Jacobite army, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie met a crushing defeat at the hands of the English. As we walk around the moor you will see the Clan Stones, each one displaying the name of a Clan that fell on that fateful day.

HIGHLAND FOLK MUSEUM

Leaving Inverness behind we start heading south with our next stop being at the Highland Folk Museum. This 18th century township brings history to life, giving visitors the chance to see what life was like for highland residents at that time. The museum was used in season one of Outlander when Claire and Jamie went collecting rent and taxes for Clan MacKenzie.

THE HERMITAGE

Continuing the journey south our last stop of the day is The Hermitage at Dunkeld. This area of exceptional natural beauty set within a woodland  leads us to Ossian’s Hall, an elaborate viewing platform perched above the Black Linn falls. This picturesque beauty spot is the perfect photo stop to capture some final memories on our journey back to your drop off location after an epic Outlander tour of Scotland.
