Scone Palace

Historic Scone – The Crowning Place of Scottish Kings, Scone pronounced ‘Skoon’, is located in the heart of Scotland, both geographically and historically. It is the site where the Lia Fáil, or Stone of Destiny, was brought to declare Kenneth MacAlpin as King of the Picts and Scots in 843 AD.

Scone was not only central to Scotland’s geography but also to its rich history. It is where legendary figures such as Macbeth and Robert the Bruce were crowned, Kings of Scots.

For nearly 500 years, Scone was home to the Stone of Scone, commonly known as the Stone of Destiny. Today, it remains the traditional stone upon which monarchs are crowned.

Scone holds a prominent place in Scottish history. It is renowned as the location of the first documented councils and parliaments. This historic site is a testament to the beginnings of governance in Scotland, making it a fascinating chapter in the nation’s story.

The Stone Of Destiny

Discover the replica of the Stone of Destiny on Moot Hill.

You can find a replica of the Stone of Destiny on Moot Hill. This simple lump of sandstone with handles, sits on the hill where Scotland’s kings were crowned.  Moot Hill earned its name as ‘Boot Hill’ in folklore and said to have been formed by lords emptying soil that they carried in their boots. After pledging their loyalty to their king on their land, they brought the soil to Scone and deposited the earth on Moot Hill to create the mound we see today.

Explore the Murray Star Maze located in the gardens at Scone Palace.

Can you navigate your way to the Centre of the Murray Star Maze in the beautiful grounds of Scone Palace? This impressive maze features 2,000 beech trees, combining copper and green beech. It was designed to represent the Earl of Mansfield’s family tartan, Ancient Murray of Tullibardine. The Murray Maze is shaped like a five-pointed star, part of the Mansfield family emblem.
Before leaving Scone Palace, be sure to enjoy a scrumptious meal fit for a king at the Scone Palace Coffee Shop and Palace Kitchens. Don’t forget to visit the well-stocked gift shop, before we head off to the city of Perth to discover the Stone of Destiny.
