Ayrshire shore excursion from greenock

Brig A' Doon

Explore Scottish Historical and Literary Past

Departing from Greenock Ocean Terminal, we set off to the beautiful Ayrshire coast.

Driving through Greenock & Port Glasgow, areas famous for their shipbuilding history, we will pass by some sculptures that hark back to the shipbuilding past. We will also drive by Newark Castle & the legendary Dumbarton Castle famous for the 13th century Viking siege and the last place that local hero William Wallace was held before being transported to London to be executed.

We will travel to the outskirts of Glasgow and travel onward to Culzean Castle.

Culzean Castle

Your visit to culzean castle

Culzean Castle, located on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland, is a majestic 18th-century mansion set within a stunning 600-acre estate.

Designed by renowned architect Robert Adam, the castle features stunning Georgian architecture with grand interiors, including an impressive oval staircase, elegant drawing rooms, and lavishly decorated bedrooms. The estate & gardens are equally enchanting, boasting meticulously landscaped grounds, serene woodland trails, and vibrant formal gardens. Highlights include the walled garden, swan pond, Herd of Red Deer, Lamas, and picturesque cliff-top views of the Firth of Clyde. Culzean Castle and gardens offer a perfect blend of historical grandeur and natural beauty.

After an incredible experience at Culzean Castle we can have a light lunch in the Home Farm Kitchen within the castle grounds or we can eat at our next stop.

ROBERT BURNS BIRTHPLACE AND MUSEUM

As we say farewell to Culzean Castle we take a short drive from Maybole to Alloway.

The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, nestled in the charming village of Alloway, is a tribute to the life and legacy of Scotland & national poet. The museum complex includes the humble thatched cottage where Burns was born, offering a glimpse into 18th-century rural life.

Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, rare manuscripts, and personal artifacts that chronicle Burns & journey from a ploughman to a literary icon. The surrounding gardens and pathways, including the Poets & Path and Brig O’Doon, create an immersive experience into the world of Burns & poetry. The museum beautifully combines historical insight with natural splendor, celebrating the enduring influence of Robert Burns.

Dean Castle

Dean Castle

As we leave land of poetry and song we head on the road back to Greenock Ocean Terminal we make a quick stop at Dean Castle, a striking 14th-century fortress surrounded by a scenic country park.

The castle, once the stronghold of the Boyd family, boasts a fascinating history and well-preserved medieval architecture. Visitors can explore the Great Hall, keep, and gatehouse, all showcasing period furnishings, and artefacts. The estate’s expansive grounds feature serene woodlands, picturesque walking trails, and a charming walled garden. Dean Castle offers a rich historical experience set within the natural beauty of its surrounding parklands. It was also used in the Starz hit show Outlander as Lord Lovat’s home.

Now it’s time to head back to your ship so you can sit back and relax while taking in more of the Scottish scenery and if you would like to add to the experience we can give you a wee dram of Single Malt Whisky to sip and savour along the way.
