Stirling Castle & The Trossachs

History, Scenery & Hairy Highland Cows

Dramatically perched on a volcanic crag above the city, Stirling Castle isn’t just scenic; it was once the key to the Kingdom of Scotland. During the Wars of Independence, it changed hands again and again between Scots and English forces, and it’s hard to stand on those ramparts without appreciating why this place mattered so much.

On arrival, you’ll have time to explore at your own pace, or you can join one of the official castle tours, which generally start on the hour.

After soaking up the history (and the views), we’ll head to the peaceful village of Thornhill for lunch at the Lion & Unicorn, a traditional, family-run country inn with a warm welcome and the sort of hearty food that keeps you going for the rest of the day. It’s a lovely, relaxed stop after the castle, and a great chance to slow down and enjoy a proper sit-down meal before we head back into the scenery.

With lunch done, we’ll travel into the Trossachs, passing through classic Highland-edge landscapes and on towards Callander, often described as the “gateway to the Highlands”. It’s a charming town with a real sense of old-style Scotland, ideal for a quick wander, a browse, and a few photos.

Meet the Hairy Highland Cows

A few miles further on, it’s time to meet some of Scotland’s most famous locals: the Highland cows at the Trossachs Woollen Mill. They’re always ready for a photo (and, conveniently, they’re very fond of a carrot or two). You’ll also have time to browse the shop for souvenirs and local gifts before we continue on.

To finish the day, we’ll take a short drive to the quietly spectacular Loch Lubnaig, a local favourite that many visitors miss entirely. It’s a brilliant spot to stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh air, and take in the scenery without the crowds. And if you’d like to end on a properly Scottish note, you’ll have the option of a wee single malt whisky to savour by the lochside.
